What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am proud of this assignment because I dedicated multiple weeks to researching the topic and learning more about diabetes. Previous to this assignment, I did not understand the severity of diabetes and the excessive amount of cases in Hawaii.
Which 21st Century Skills do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
This assignment addresses civil literacy and engagement skills because I researched a local problem impacting Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander populations. Diabetes impacts the daily lives of people in our community and writing this essay allowed me to become aware of the disadvantages that have led to the epidemic levels of diabetes in Hawaii.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skills with this assignment?
I improved upon my 21st century skills through this essay because I needed to research, analyze, communicate, and use informational skills to produce a well written research essay.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most challenging part of this assignment was researching and communicating my newly found knowledge in the form of an informative essay. I found it challenging to write in a language that my audiences could understand. I went through several drafts of this essay before I turned it in.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
The only advice Professor Andaluz gave me after grading this essay was to use simpler language. If I could rewrite or revise this essay, I would try to adjust the language.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
This relates to what we learned in the past as I have been working on my writing skills, especially directing my essays towards a specific audience. I saw major progress in this essay in comparison to the first essay I wrote in English 100.
How can you apply this to future learning?
I will apply every piece of advice I got in Professor Andaluz’s class to future learning. I will make sure my essays in the future are directed towards a specific audience; written in a proper tone; have proper grammar; and write several drafts before submission. Not only did I gain these skills in her class, but I also learned the importance of using office hours and university tutors when you are struggling.
