During the summer of my junior year, I shadowed Dr. Biedel, a family medicine physician, at the Lahaina Maui Medical clinic. I observed Dr. Biedel’s patient encounters, observed chart prepping, assisted with patient preparation, assisted with x-rays, and labeled samples. Something that I really enjoyed about this experience was learning about the different relationship types different doctors have with their patients. Dr. Biedel had been her patients' doctor throughout all of their lives and knew them each personally. Throughout my 65 work hours, I learned many invaluable skills about medicine and patient care. This opportunity gave me the confidence that I’ve chosen the right path, which brings me joy while allowing me to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
